Circular saws are used in various fields – for instance in metal, stone and marble processing, in the wood industry and many more. Circular saws require speed up to 6000 rotations per minute.
Those installed in machines are made of alloy steel which has to be wear-resistant and protected against cracking. The cross section of the thickness requires accurate tolerance in order to prevent imbalance and, thus, uncontrolled machine movements and material loss. After its modernization, the hot rolling mill of Salzgitter Flachstahl achieves outstanding parameters for thickness tolerance, which significantly exceed the tolerances described in the norm of performance. The produced in Salzgitter steel with added Chromium, such as 51CrV4 or high carbon grades (67 – C80) with the highest surface and pureness requirements, constitute a good example of the elevated parameters.
What does “maximum transversal tolerance of 50 micrometers” actually mean?
In such cases, it is recommended to maintain the tolerance of thickness with respect to the width of the hot rolled strip with the maximum value of 50 micrometers (0,050mm) between both of the strip edges. This approximately corresponds to half of the thickness of a single human hair.
This can only be achieved by means of the most modern technologies and high employee qualifications. The hot rolling mill uses the CVC technology (Continuous Variable Crown) which comprises of two working rollers which can be moved with respect to themselves when required. The pressure force of 4000 tonnes and speed up to 20 meters per second (about 70 km/h) aren’t rare for this type of steel.
Salzgitter offers many steel grades produced according to standard or more specific client requirements for the entire sector of band and circular saw manufacturers, which require special treatment during its production, mainly as “Index grade” (=steel grades which generate high residual stress during cooling). The raw material we use for the production of these grades, has to be rolled as as fast as it is possible, in order to prevent the creation of residual stress during cooling. Intelligent software used both in the smelting and rolling process allows to coordinate the process to guarantee optimal end products.
