Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH (SZFG), a subsidiary of Salzgitter AG, has commenced one of Salzgitter’s most significant unit investments in the last decade, the “Hot-dip Galvanization 3” Project (FV3). The project shall be carried our in cooperation with the SMS Group from Dusseldorf, which is the system engineer.
The new production line, with the capacity of 500.000 tonnes a year, supplements the two already existing hot-dip galvanizing lines. “This project is a significant element of the Salzgitter Group’s policy which concentrates on quality improvement in the sector of flat products. This way we are strengthening our position on the market as a producer of premium goods designed for domestic and international clients from the automotive industry. We’ve decided to make this investment even though the political and social conditions in Germany and, generally Europe, for large industrial projects aren’t too favorable at the time being” explains Prof. PH.D. Eng. Heinz-Jörg Fuhrmann, President of Salzgitter AG Management Board.
The FV3 line will start up in 2022. It is planned to produce high strength steel grades for chassis and body construction, for light car structures and vehicle safety.
Ulrich Grethe, a member of the Management Board of the Group and President of the SZFG Management Board said: “FV3 is significant for guaranteeing the Salzgitter steelworks profitability and future employment. This investment will make it possible to further optimize our already rich product portfolio.” The new line will produce hot-dip galvanized sheets with thickness from 0,7mm up to 2,5mm and width from 900mm up to 1700mm. Coiled sheets have maximum weight 32 tonnes.
High strength and high resistance steel production is possible by means of high cooling indicators and the oxidation/reduction process in the FV3 furnaces. “Product selection will start with dual-phase steel with highest strength properties, through multi – phase steel and up to steel grades which have undergone partial quenching and portioning” – explains Ph. D. Eng. Michael Brühl, Director of the Cold Rolled Flat Product Department of Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH. The configuration of this new line creates construction and technical conditions for implementing further innovative and material concepts.
