In order to decrease fuel consumption and, thus, carbon dioxide emissions in cars, the automotive constructors and engineers are most interested in reducing the vehicles’ weight. Decreasing the sheet
thickness, which the car’s body is made of, may particularly contribute to succeeding in the performance of this task. Maintaining the stability of the structure and the safety of the passengers in this case requires high strength steel. The high strength steel produced by Salzgitter has been particularly designed to serve this purpose thanks to its extraordinary forming properties and high strength. For instance, high strength steel can be used for producing both the demanding interior parts and the exterior large surface parts.
The potential of decreasing the vehicles’ weight through decreasing the sheet thickness has already been proved in extensive tests, including the FEA simulations (Finite Element Analysis). Prior to the production of parts, the FEA simulation offers the possibility of defining the material’s suitability with regard to a particular component. This has contributed to the possibility of reducing the sheet thickness for various elements in comparison to the conventional sheet by 10-20%.
Salzgitter produces a wide range of cold rolled sheets starting with low carbon grades for cold forming, such as DC03, DC04, DC05, DC06 and DC07, through sheets with high yield strength, such as HC180B, HC180Y, HC220B and HC500LA and up to multi-phase sheets CR590Y980T-DP or HCT980X. Sheets are produced according to both EN norms and VDA 239-100.
